A clear point of view

Software should earn
its place.

ForDesktop is an independent directory of useful desktop apps and practical guides, starting with Windows and Mac.

What makes an app worth including?

A specific problem solved well, a clear way to get the software, and enough information to understand the trade-offs. We make room for independent developers and open-source projects alongside established tools.

How we research

Our launch profiles are based on developer websites, official documentation, project repositories, and official store listings. Each profile includes sources and the date they were checked. We distinguish documented features from our editorial judgment.

These profiles are not hands-on reviews. We do not publish invented ratings, performance measurements, user testimonials, or claims that every app has been personally tested. If we publish a benchmark or hands-on review later, it will describe the device, software version, and method used.

What “best” means here

Our shortlists are starting points for a particular need, not exhaustive rankings of every available product. We explain who a tool fits and when you may prefer something else. Pricing, platform availability, and store restrictions can change; always check the linked developer and store pages.

Downloads & developer independence

App install buttons lead to the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store. We do not mirror installers. Developer links are provided so you can read the original documentation and explore other official distribution options.

ForDesktop is not affiliated with Microsoft or Apple. App names, icons, and trademarks belong to their respective owners and are used to identify the products discussed.

Funding & our own software

The current site has no advertising or affiliate links. If we add sponsorships, affiliate links, or apps made by ForDesktop's creator, those relationships will be clearly labeled. Payment will not be presented as an independent recommendation.
